We take part in daily Numeracy lessons. During this time we learn many strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We look into many other areas of maths such as percentages, fractions, measurements and data handling. We also have 10 minute daily Number sessions where we practise our counting and mental arithmetic skills. We enjoy maths; it is useful because we use numbers and problem solving in all aspects of our lives.
We have Literacy lessons every day, where we learn about the various styles of writing and text types. We take part in a ‘Big Writing’ session every Friday and build up skills towards this throughout the week. These skills sessions take the form of Big Writing and VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation) games. These all help us to learn how to use words and punctuation properly, and how to construct sentences, and ultimately develop the standards of our writing.
In Science, we learn about the world around us. Science lessons take a topic based format due to our thematic curriclum. We learn about things such as liquids, solids and gases, light and shadow, life-cycles, materials and lots more. We learn how to carry out fair experiments, and to predict their results. We like to find out how things happen and why.
Due to our thematic curriculum Geography and History lessons are sometimes combined and taught in a topic led approach. We learn about different countries and cultures in the world, and facts about the Earth like what causes volcanoes and earthquakes. We use atlases, reference books, the Internet and videos to help us learn. We also learn about other civilisations such as Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and the Romans. In addition to this, we learn about important past events such as World Wars One and Two.
We have Religious Education on a weekly basis. We learn about the six main world religions - Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism. We study their beliefs and festivals and culture in general.
Our P.S.H.C.E. is a SEALS led curriculum (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) .We learn about ourselves and other people; how to keep healthy, safe and happy. We talk about things like drugs and bullying. These discussions take the form of circle times which involove us all.
We have Music once a week. We learn new songs to sing, and play musical instruments. Some pupils can volunteer in the school choir. We have recently recorded our Northern House School Song – this can be heard on here. Children are also given the opportunity to learn a range of new instruments such as guitar, clarinet, violin, cello and recorders.
We have Art once a week.
We do Design and Technology once a week.
In P.E., we learn skills for games such as football, hockey, rugby and rounders. We use the playground or we can do indoor P.E in our school hall when covering dance and gymnastic sessions. On Sports day we head over to St Edwards and borrow their outdoor facilities! We use the Ferry Pool for swimming lessons. P.E. keeps us fit and healthy, and is also a lot of fun.
